Editorials

In both of these editorials, I've had to cover complex issues in a professional manner. The first editorial in this package was one that explained the connection between changes in the high school schedule and the decline in enrollment in the journalism class. I had to interview a variety of sources to corroborate information about the structure of the previous high school schedule, and I looked into Journalism enrollment going back to 2015 to verify that the decline was happening. The article highlighted the importance of journalism in maintaining a democratic community. The other editorial covered the Covenant shooting, a highly emotional and current issue at press time. Instead of choosing to highlight an overtly political stance, I tried to focus more on the lives of the victims. To me, that personalized the issue and showed the importance of remembering that gun violence deaths are becoming much more than statistics--they're actively harming real communities.
