Law, Ethics, and News Literacy

The primary way I learned more about journalistic ethics and the state of the journalism industry was through my attendance at the 2023 Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference as the Tennessee Representative. During the program, we took seminar classes on Journalistic Ethics and First Amendment Laws. We also spoke with the CEO of C-SPAN and learned more about the role that owners of media corporations play in the news each respective corporation produces. I try to relay those lessons to my staff every day by emphasizing the importance of treating sources with dignity and respect, diligently recording and transcribing interviews, and minimizing conflicts of interest.
